Pergola with louvered roof for Futura primary school
The new campus of the Futura primary school for special education in Menen offers many opportunities for kids to play and learn outdoors. In addition to a paved playground, there is a large lawn area where children can burn off their excess energy daily. However, there was no natural shade or shelter anywhere. This all changed thanks to a donation from Brustor.
Need for a shading solution
Futura provides customised education for special needs children aged two and a half to 15 to meet parenting, education and care needs. ‘We have a fair number of children with behavioural and emotional issues,’ says Stefanie, headmistress of Futura primary school. ‘But also children with autism, intellectual disabilities and general learning disabilities.’
Outdoor activities are essential at Futura as they stimulate students’ motor, social and cognitive development. Children are exposed to different sensory stimuli outdoors and gain new experiences.

‘Some of our children don’t always realise they’re getting too hot or sunburnt, so it’s important that as a school, we provide them with enough shade.’
A durable pergola courtesy of Brustor and Sunor
To create this shade, Futura joined forces with Brustor and Sunor, a local dealer. A pergola tailored to the school’s needs was installed, creating a cosy spot for the children to spend time without the risk of overheating or sunburn.
The pergola is designed with cosiness in mind and provides daily protection during playtime, outdoor lessons and activities. The choice of aluminium as the base material makes the structure extra durable and weatherproof.

A louvered roof that moves in sync with the sun
The roof is made up of rotating louvers that you move to different positions with a remote control. This gives teachers control over how much sunlight gets through. The louvered roof opens fully to let in gentle morning sunlight, stays half-closed for bright afternoon sun, and even closes completely during a brief rain shower.

Extra shelter
Apart from the adjustable roof, an integrated screen was also installed to ensure the children are extra well-protected from wind or low sun. This addition makes the pergola even more versatile: it creates a sheltered spot where the children can play or read quietly. ‘We are incredibly grateful for the amazing donation from Brustor. Spending time outdoors is very important for our children, and we are convinced this marks an important step forward.’
